Centre for Development Information

The Centre for Development Information (CDI) was established under the Ministry of Finance & Planning in 1979 with the assistance of UNDP-UNESCO, upgrading a small library which was functioning as since 1956 to serve the purpose of coordinating, collating and retrieving information relevant to development and to national development planning.

The Centre for Development Information operates as a special library and the Documentation Unit of Information Services on Economic and related subjects, caters to the information needs of planners, policy makers and senior administrators scholars & researchers of the country.

Membership

Professional staff of the Ministry of Finance and Planning and Ministry of Policy Planning and Implementation are eligible to be members of the CDI. Outside researchers and scholars, local as well as foreign, are most welcome for reference.

Resources

Main catalogue contains monographs, unpublished reports, proceedings, news paper clippings ( in a computerized data bases) and CD ROMs.

CDI maintains a special collection of

  • United Nations Publications
  • World Bank and IMF Publications
  • SAARC Documents

National & International Cooperation

CDI serves as the National Focal Point for the SAARC Documentation Centre, New Delhi. Under this programme coordination with the information centers & libraries within the country as well as among SAARC member countries.

Participating in on-line local networks

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka established an Economic and Banking Library Network. It was linked with 20 libraries and institutions of which 9 are related to the banking and finance sector and 12 are in the economic research and development sector. CDI also has the access membership of this network.

Sri Lanka National Library maintains National Union Catalogue, CDI contributes to this catalogue by sending information on economic and social science.

National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka (NSF) – which is also the ASTINFO representative in Sri Lanka is in charge of coordinating documentation work in the science and technology fields.

CDI links with those networks effectively for information sharing.

CDI is situated on the Ground Floor of the Treasury Building.
